Beaches |

When you come to Kalkan for your holiday you will be spoilt for choice of beaches. From the man made beach at Kalkan to the award winning Patara beach which is just 20-30 minutes away. The map below shows the location of some of the beaches in the Kalkan area:

|
| 01 Kalkan Beach |
Next to the harbour Kalkan has a pretty, pebbly beach with clear water. The beach has been extended in recent years by the Kalkan Foundation as part of their development plan for improving the infrastructure of the town. Sun beds and umbrellas are for hire.
It may not be the best beach in the locality, but it is only a few minutes from Yesil Kaya. It is also easy to pop into the nearby bars for a drink on the harbour. |
| 02 Kaputas Beach |
| Kaputas beach is 7Km to the east of Kalkan towards Kas (6min by car or 10min by dolmus). |
| 'A perfect crescent of sand lapped by clear turquoise waters sheltered by towering cliffs' |
| Turkey Paradise |
| Kaputas is a beautiful small beach at the mouth of an impressive gorge. The huge chasm in the cliff is awesome when viewed from the road high above the bay. If you are driving to Kaputas, park just off the road by the 300 or so steps down to the beach. You will need to cover the windscreen from the sun as there is no shade. There are no facilities on the beach.

| 03 Patara Beach |
| ...voted the world's best beach in 1999 |
Patara beach is 19Km on the N400 to the west of Kalkan towards Fethyie, turning off after about 9Km on to a signposted road towards Patara (20min by car or 30min by dolmus). You will need to take note of the time of the last dolmus back to Kalkan.
If you are going by car there is a barrier about 2Km from the beach where you will need to pay an entrance fee (combined - beach and archaeological site) which is currently 10YTL. On foot there is open access and there is no entrance fee when travelling by dolmus. The archaeological site and the beach beyond are both open daily from 7.30am - 7.00pm from May to October. From November to April the opening hours are from 8.30am to 5.00pm.
The beach is out of bounds after closing hours to protect the loggerhead turtles that breed there from May to October. It is a prime protected nesting site.

There is parking with W.C. facilities for the beach beyond the ruins, and quite a long boardwalk from the car park to the magnificent, uncrowded 18Km of white sand beyond. You will not need to carry house and home with you as, on one end of the beach there is a seasonal beach bar that offers refreshments and light meals. Sun beds and umbrellas are also for hire here.
The history of Patara and what remains today
For an informative account of the important role that Patara played in the history of Lycian Turkey please read through our excursions page, or visit www.lycianturkey.com (Kalamus Travel). Many people are surprised to discover that St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) was born here around 300 A.D.

| 04 Kisla Beach |
The sea is less than 100 metres from our villa and it takes 5-10 minutes to reach the beach as the road zig-zags its way down the hill. Across rougher terrain it can be reached within 5 minutes. Although small, Kisla is a pebbly beach near the platforms of Kalkan Beach Club.
The swimming here is easy as the waters near the shore are shallow although small pebbles are underfoot. Snorkelling is enjoyable here as the water is clear and there are a few interesting fish to be seen. Gulets often anchor here during the day and add further interest. |
Beach Clubs |
There are many beach clubs in Kalkan, in both directions from the harbour. These beach clubs are platforms cut into the rock that offer facilities for sunbathing and swimming. Some charge about £2 to £3 a day for the loan of sunbeds and umbrellas. There are restaurants in all the beach clubs.
Water taxis run an efficient shuttle service to and from each beach club to the harbour from 7am. to 7pm. Dolmus buses also carry visitors to the clubs. There is a variety of water sports available from the beach clubs.
