| There are many interesting boutiques in Kalkan open all day and up to around midnight every night from May to October. This selection is merely highlighting a few favourites but there are many others worthy of a visit. The more traditional 'bazaars' are full of exciting gifts and spill on to the streets. |

Supermarkets & Market |
There are two large supermarkets and numerous shops selling food and drink in Kalkan. These are well stocked with a range of brands. They also sell fruit and vegetables and raw and cooked meats. AS you come down the hill into Kalkan take the first right off the roundabout and follow the road uphill to the 'Sevil' 11. Kartin 12 is on the left of the road leading to the market. They stock our favourite tub of salty feta cheese in the refrigerated unit here, wonderful cubed with diced onion; olives and plentiful sweet tomatoes. Their fresh eggs are beautiful. They accept plastic, sterling or lira in the supermarkets.
But for meat we think it takes a lot to beat the butcher's right on the brow of the hill coming down into Kalkan opposite the roundabout. They are clean and reasonable. The chicken breast portions and lamb steaks, cut off a large joint in front of you, made one of the best barbeques ever with skewers of aubergine, mushroom, courgette and peppers from the Thursday market. They also stock charcoal in handy sized bags. The market is probably the best source for vegetables and fruit and they are excellent value for money.
There is wonderful bread everywhere in Kalkan. Probably the nearest in the morning from the villa is Platin Market (left) 13. Although milk is 'long life', we found that the 'light' milk was the best. It is advisable to pay in lira, and to remember to check the bill.
There is also a small, well stocked shop (Kisla Market & Bob's Cafe) towards the farthest end of Kisla 14, which provide a free local delivery service. At lunchtime you can phone for a cooked lunch, and it will be delivered right to the door withing 30 minutes. A kebab meal (kebab, chips, salad, rice) will cost you about £4. See the restaurants page for more information.
Thursday is market day in Kalkan from around 8.30am to 7pm. The shaded outdoor market 15 can be found on the right on the street that goes up from the junction with Kalamar Road to the garage. It is a fair trek uphill from the centre, but there is usually room to park on the street & there are also taxis around the entrance to the market in case you need any help with carrying your purchases home in the heat.
It is quite a large market but not compared to the one in Fethiye (1 hour away) on Tuesdays which is probably the largest on the Turquoise Coast. Although the market in Kas (30mins away) on Fridays is similar I believe that it is much more pleasant to stroll around Kalkan's market even though some say that the identical stall holders charge more in Kalkan than elsewhere! However, prices are reasonable and it is expected that you bargain. There is a wide variety of goods from 'branded' clothing and watches, bags and household linens to traditional Turkish goods and plenty of cheap but good quality fruit and vegatables and beautiful honey, cheese and olives. |
