So, you want to hire a car in Turkey. You have serveral choices: book it at the airport and drive to Kalkan, or take a bus or taxi to Kalkan and book it there. This page gives you all the details you need (hopefully!).
Whilst driving in Turkey is generally an enjoyable experience, we recommend that you don't hire a car and drive to Kalkan if this is your first visit to the region (or if your flight arrives late at night). The roads from the airports are continually being improved, but should not be tackled by a tired driver after a 4 hour flight!

| Driving In Turkey |
- Traffic drives on the right in Turkey, which means you must give way to the right at junctions.
- The speed limits are 120kph (70mph) on motorways, 90kph (55mph) on main roads and 50kph (30mph) in built-up areas, although Turkish drivers often interpret these flexibly.
- Be aware that Turkey has one of the highest road accident rates in the whole of Europe (14 times worse than the UK) with badly illuminated roads one of the principal causes of mishaps.
- If possible, avoid driving in rural areas at night, as many drivers choose not to use their headlights at all. You should drive defensively at all times.
- If you do have an accident, it helps if you are a member of either the AA or RAC, who have reciprocal arrangements with the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association, also known as the TTOK (Tel: +90 212 2804449, Web: www.turing.org.tr), allowing you to take advantage of their free repair and recovery service.
- Drink-driving is an offence in Turkey. Anyone found to be over the legal limit (which roughly corresponds to two glasses of wine, two bottles of beer or one measure of spirits) can expect a spot fine and to have their license confiscated by the police for up to three months.
- Road signs in Turkey conform to international standards (towns are blue, archaeological sites are yellow), although you might like to familiarise yourself with the following terms: dur (stop), yavas (slow), tehlike (danger), girilmez (no entry), tek yon (one-way), yasak bölge (forbidden area), park yapilmaz (no parking).
